Lazy Saturday

It's raining here in Hendersonville so Randy & I can't put in the french drains today. Oy veh, guess I'll just have to suffer & not do all that physical labor today. (big sarcastic sigh).

I love having an unexpected free slot in my schedule. It so rarely happens anymore.

The Art Of The Schmooze

The origin of the word "schmooze" is Yiddish. It means to converse informally, to make small talk. In the 70's & 80's "schmoozing" became "networking". Guess that sounds more politically correct. Whatever. By the time I entered the world of Travel & Tourism, Chamber of Commerce, etc., in the 90's, it had been elevated to a real art. There was a lady I worked with who literally made her living getting sales for the hotel by doing nothing more than going to groups & being highly visible. (She called it schmoozing).

When I started working for myself I decided to "work" the local Chamber, & it did pay off after awhile. Problem is, it is really tiring to constantly put yourself out there & keep up a public face. It's also very time-consuming. A few years ago I made the decision--no more committees, groups, or any other gatherings for me unless I just felt like it. Now I rarely attend meetings, & even then I have an attitude that is much more relaxed & I think it works better! If there is a group of people I don't want to be around, I don't get around them. I don't worry about what people think, I don't worry if I am wearing the right clothes or if my pen looks expensive or whatever. I just hang out & get to know people. No expectations on my part, no requirements on anyone else's other than to not be rude.

Is it age that lets a person relax in public or is it something else? Why does it work so much better when you quit trying so hard? Is it a confidence thing?

Zig Ziglar (here's a link for all you youngsters) always taught that listening is the best way to be remembered.

I think he's right. At the very least I've been having a lot more fun doing it this way.

See you at the schmoozefest later. I'll be the one in jeans.

It Must Be True - It Was On Paul Harvey

November 11, 2008, a commercial flight was being tailed by an unknown flying object. This was verified by two radar towers--one commercial & one military, in addition to an air control tower. The military sent out F-16's immediately. As soon as they (the F-16's) got fairly close, whatever it was just went straight up-far faster than the F-16's could possibly keep up with.

Who knows what it could be? I for one am glad there are still mystery's out there : )

I'll try to find the report that Paul Harvey Jr. said came out today. Meanwhile here is the link so you can listen for yourself. It's around the 1 minute mark.

Enjoy!

Anyone Have Ideas For A Class?

I teach at Blue Ridge Community College & the money I make is what I use to buy Christmas presents with. The problem is, since the economy tanked, classes are way WAY down & most of them are not even getting enough students signed up for the class to make.

I am trying to figure out some new courses to teach & need to turn in my ideas in one week if possible. The courses could be as short as 4 hours or as long as 16 weeks. They do not have to be all business-oriented. I am comfortable teaching business people, but also enjoy teaching seniors, computer newbies, or downright geeky people.

I am thinking about resurrecting some old classes-- "Wild Wild Web", "Realtor Web Savvy", "I Hate My Computer", etc. I am definitely going to offer Business Blogging, Web Marketing, & "Making Every Penny Count (coupon class Merle & I have been working on).

Any other ideas? Seriously, what would be fun & interesting to learn about? My email address is: wncwebgrl@gmail.com

Thanks for your help!

The Exchange Consignment Sale

Randy & I were in Greenville over the weekend & saw flyers everywhere for "The Exchange Consignment Sale".

Evidently it's going to be a pretty big event--March 13th through the 15th at the Upper SC Fairgrounds in Easley.

Sounds like a bargain hunters paradise.

Here is the link.

See you there : )

What Were We Thinking?

Exactly 35 years ago today Terry Jacks "Seasons in the Sun" hit number one in the US.

Remember that song? If you do, then you are probably at least my age...

It was the weirdest thing, a song about dying, set to the sappiest soundtrack, sung the same way, & everybody--I mean everybody knew all the words to it.

Here's the lyrics--be warned--you might start humming. If you do, don't be ashamed. You were conditioned to it in the 70's. If you can't get it out of your head, seek help! Look up Starland Vocal Band on Napster as fast as you can...

Seasons in the Sun

Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time......

Goodbye Papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along.

Goodbye Papa its hard to die
When all the birds
are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children everywhere
When you see them I'll be there.

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone.

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone.

Goodbye Michelle my little one
You gave me love and helped me find the sun
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground.

Goodbye Michelle it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone

All our lives we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time

Another Raw Chocolate Vitamix Recipe

Chocolate Protein Shake

  • 2 cups pure water
  • 2 cups ice
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 4 or 5 tbs raw cacao
  • 1 cup barely sprouted raw almonds
  • 1 cup protein sprout mix (or oat sprouts)
  • 4 tbs agave nectar
Soak the almonds 24 to 48 hrs ahead of time until there's a little sprout peeking out of the end of them.

Add almonds to water & mix on variable/low gradually increasing to high until they are completely pulverized & the mixture is really smooth. About 45 seconds should do it.

Add the rest of the ingredients & do the same thing.

This shake is high protein, low glycemic, & tastes great. It provides sustained energy & is a good way for me to avoid caffeine in the afternoon. The sprouted almonds & regular sprouts are packed with healthy enzymes & raw chocolate is brain food! I love drinking this--it has become one of my favorite recipes because it is so easy to make. I occasionally add 1 cup blueberries to it, to change up the taste a bit.

Enjoy!

Sweating With The Oldies...

Yep I said "with", not "to". As in, I'm at an indian sweat lodge all day today. Ever been to one? A traditional SL is very interesting & practically every part of the ceremony is rife with significance.

A sweat is also good for ridding your body of toxins--think of it as a powerful antioxident if you will. Not only that, but a good sweat can really relax you--there's the fire (which is always relaxing to me), the quiet environment that most of them are in, & the fellowship as well.

I am really glad to be invited to this one. We're working on a video/web documentary & this is the first visit. I'll let you know how it goes.

My Computer Crashed....

It was a bad scene...

One of the hard drives (not the CPU as I suspected) decided that it's time had come.

Thanks to Walt & Tom for getting my machine back to working condition again.

RIP Maxtor--you served me well!

Just goes to show you that I really am the luckiest person I know. My data is safe, we had another hard drive in the shop, & the drive that went bad wasn't my primary anyway. Not only that, but it's fixed in less than 24 hours.

I'll get back to regular posting as soon as I get somewhat caught up in my work.

You Better Back That ____ Up!

I'm talking about your data of course. Get your mind out of the gutter.

Today I went in to the office prepared to be Little Miss do-good & diligently work on a report to blow the mind of my newest-biggest client at our first meeting tomorrow. I worked (diligently as I said) & in the process had three or four windows open in both monitors. I had auto-save on in the first file but forgot to set it in the others.

75% through the report & my computer decided that it was working far too hard & wanted to take a little vacation. It did this in the form of a meltdown. Eventually it just decided to reboot.

Now being married to one supertech & sister to another, I'm just not used to hardware that quits on me. It feels rotten--how do other folks put up with it? I'm not trying to be a snob, I'm serious here. Needless to say I spent the rest of the afternoon & evening getting the machine ready to go bye bye until it gets out of hardware rehab. I think it's the CPU but don't know for sure.

Back to the subject. Backing up saved my butt. Hope you're doing some backing up of your data too. If you're confused about the process, or just want to gripe about hardware, feel free to do it here. I can now commiserate fully.

Here Are Some Raw Food and Vitamix Recipes

Tom & I are big into the Vitamix & raw food recipes. Here are some of the most recent things we've been creating.

Pecan Milk (tastes a bit like eggnog)
  • 5 cups pure water
  • 1 cup raw pecans (soaked in water overnight is best if you have time)
  • 3 tbs agave nectar
  • 2 tbs vanilla
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
Blend until smooth. Strain it if you want to. (The pulp can be used later to make cookies). If you want the fiber, then go ahead--drink up! I've been adding a peach to this & heating it up just a bit, & really like it that way.

Raw Chocolate Pudding-ish Dessert
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 3 tbs raw cacao
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 pitted dates
  • 1 cup of pure water
Add all the ingredients to the vitamix, blend with water to your desired consistency. *note--using the water you soaked the dates in will add flavor. I call it pudding-ish because it doesn't taste like Jello pudding--which is what you might expect. It tastes far better!

Here's my favorite for tonight:

Sprouted Pancakes & Banana Syrup
  • 1 cup of whatever you've sprouted lately
  • 1 cup raw pecan milk or almond milk or cashew milk
  • 1 cup flax seeds
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
Mix sprouts with milk in Vitamix until smooth. Add salt, vanilla. Add flax seed & blend until the mix is the consistency of pancake batter. Pour into nonstick heated pan & cook on medium low, turning as needed, till done.

Bananna Syrup
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup pure water
Blend bananas & vanilla in Vitamix till smooth. Add water to achieve desired consistency.

That's what we had for supper last night. Man, it was good! The pancakes are so dense that they are very filling, but without all the fat & gluten's in regular pancakes. The banana syrup had a very intense flavor. I'm sure you could add blueberry's, strawberry's, or whatever to the pancake batter to make them even more flavorful. IHOP has nothing on us!

Seriously, pancakes without guilt? Too good to be true...

Hope you enjoy these ; ) Let me know what you think if you try them out.

Good Music Alert - Angie Aparo

My old friend Angie will be playing in Greenville soon. Here is the info:

Angie Aparo
Medusa's
GREENVILLE, SC UNITED STATES
Friday, February 27, 2009
9:00 PM
Ticket Price: $12.00

Fair warning--he's not for the faint of heart, but if you crave talent & sound & semi-cracked humor then he's the show for you. Just don't expect him to be polite or nice cuz that's not how he rolls. Ever.

My Lack of Television

People often ask why I don't watch TV. The answer is simple--I don't have time. For the first 10 years or so of my marriage I worked two jobs. Then when I gave one of them up to take a salaried job my work schedule became so erratic that I was never home enough get used to any show.

After playing music, opening up my own business took care of any free time I had left over. I don't have a rule about TV, I have just conditioned myself to not watch it much.

I found that I don't really miss it at all. My books are always there, no matter what time of day it is.

All that being said, I have been watching "Gone Country" with George Clinton in it for the last 3 weeks (a record for me). That guy is one of my all-time favorite musicians & I have had a blast watching him. As for the rest of the show, meh, it's ok. But George...there's a true star!

Check it out on CMT at 8pm on Saturdays.

Fixing Up The House - Room By Room

Randy & I bought a kind of old house a few years ago. The original owners were in their 60's when they built it & in their mid-90's when we bought it from them. It was in pretty good shape, all things considered, but had never been updated at all. We're talking bullet lamps, sertek ceilings, old wiring that needed updating, etc. It was like walking in to the haunted Brady Bunch home. Kind of cool, kind of creepy.

Here's the list of projects we've done that I can remember:
  • re-wired everything
  • re-plumbed everything
  • worked alot on the yard
  • screened in the side porch - it's the best room we've got! I love being out there.
  • built a workshop in the basement
  • added a bunch of insulation - well worth the investment of time & money
  • put in new windows, including a bay window in the living room
  • added a storage building
  • added a covered parking area
  • widened the driveway
  • new, better gutters
  • took out a wall between two bedrooms to create one bigger bedroom
  • built a room in the basement for Randy's "stuff"
  • built a game room in the basement
  • added a kick-ass alarm system & camera system
So the house is kind of small by today's mc-mansion standards, just 1200 ft, but we've been able to add the attic as storage & we now have the entire basement being used, so that makes it seem alot bigger to us.

Now we are at the point of being able to start actually updating rooms. The bathroom was the first (needed it the most).

Here's a picture of it as it was:

First of all, why the walls were gray & white with that weird green color porcelain, I simply don't know.

Secondly, the room is tiny. No storage area at all.

Third, the tub is solid porcelain & very heavy

Pipes showing, naked lightbulb, no electrical outlets

Everything was discolored.

In short--yuck!

Here's the end result:

So, what do you think?

I still can't believe that Randy took out a 740 lb tub by himself, and yes, I have pictures to prove it.

For some weird reason the room feels bigger now.

It's nice to have a place to put towels, shampoo, etc.

So I know it's just a bathroom, but it is nice to have this project done.

We freecycled what we could of the old stuff but most of the fixtures were beyond what anybody wanted.

This is the only bathroom in the house so replacing floors, tubs, etc., was tricky! Luckily we have a shower at my office (just down the road at the time), but we had to replace the toilet & get the tile down in a matter of hours.

It was freezing cold too--sub-zero temperatures.

Here's Vena supervising the whole process. She's helpful that way.

I'll have to check with Randy but I believe this whole project cost a little under $1800

Nothing Lives Up To The Flowbee

Remember the revolutionary home haircutting system? Your haircut was only a suction away! The Flowbee had one of the funniest commercials of all time but I haven't been able to find it for you on YouTube or anywhere else for that matter. Oh well, I'll send it out if I find it. Till then I leave you with the one still image of the mamaw & the magnificence that is the Flowbee...

Friday the 13th

The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriphobia.

The Stress Management Center & Phobia Institute in Asheville estimates that up to 21 million people in the US are afraid of this day & might even lay out of work or even stay in bed due to their fear. Hmmm, I didnt realize phobias could have such cool fringe benefits.

Tom used to have a phobia of macaroni & cheese. No joke, it would freak him out. He should have been phobic about telling me, knowing that I blog!

Personally, I am afraid of trying to pronounce paraskavedekatriphobia...

I'm going to be goofing around with some customization options for this blog for the next few days. Just wanted to let you know.

Inventions

My friend Gary once decided that there needed to be some sort of system that would text your phone when your PO Box had mail, thus eliminating the need to drive to the Post Office. I thought that was a pretty good idea.

Randy has often thought out loud about the feasibility of an engine that would run with magnets only--& now it has happened. I can't wait till that becomes practical.

Through the years Tom has come up with too many ideas to even begin to list--most of them on the silly side, but interesting nevertheless.

I still want to see the surface of my desk turned into a giant keyboard/mouse area. That's getting closer.

Any other ideas for inventions out there?

I Don't Care What The Groundhog Said...

Today's weather has been amazing. Right now it's 64 degrees : ) This time last week I was posting (aka bitching) about how cold it was. Today the windows are all open & my cats have been outside on the side porch for hours now. I know it will change & get cold again soon but it's been really great to have at least this one day of basically perfect weather.

Harris Teeter Triple Coupons Triumph

Grocery shopping is one of my chores & while I don't really care so much for it (as opposed to doing something fun), I do like saving money. Putting a little effort into learning the "insider couponing techniques" then being able to see a tangible return on my investment of time is acceptable to me.

Here's today's receipt from the Harris Teeter triple coupons sale:

$94.33 Total before discount
$35.16 Total amount I paid after coupons applied
$59.17 Total savings

Not too bad for about 3 hours of time altogether.

White Squirrels and Suet Recipe

Today I saw 3 yep, 3 white squirrels playing in the yard. I tried for a photo but they took off before I could get the camera outside. Seems Hendersonville is catching up to Brevard finally.

I made some suet & put it out right before the cold snap last week & have had a lot of different animals eating it. Yes, I put it there for all the animals, squirrels, birds, whatever.

Here's the recipe:

  • 1 cup lard
  • 2 cups peanuts that have been grinded down to the consistency of crunchy peanut butter
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 2 cups oats--not instant oatmeal
  • 1 cup raisins
Stir lard & peanut butter together in glass pan until blended. It's ok to put the mixture in the microwave for a bit to help with the stirring.

Add cornmeal & raisins
Stir in oats
Roll into whatever shape you want.

Use within one week.

*I also use whatever raw nuts or berries I have to spare in the kitchen. Some people add powdered eggshells, but I don't & the animals don't seem to mind!

Here's a link to a photo Merle took of one of our squirrels a couple of months ago.

Raw Chocolate Vitamix Recipes

Randy says he learned how important chocolate is not just from me, but from going in & out of multiple offices all day. Through the years he's evolved from bringing home the occasional Hershey bar, to bringing home "the good stuff", ie Godiva, Vans, etc. What a good husband!

I do like the typical "good stuff" but in the last year or so my tastes have evolved to more exotic chocolate. I discovered chocolate and red chilis at Earth Fare (my favorite last year). The spicy zing along with the dark chocolate just tasted right somehow.

For Christmas I got some raw chocolate & a book about the health benefits of raw chocolate. I have seen the health claims in various places on the internet about chocolate but didn't pay much attention to them till I read the book. It was pretty interesting. For instance did you know that raw cacao beans are known as 'the food of the gods' and were used as money by the Aztecs? Ok, so you knew that.

Well then, how about this: Cacao powder and butter are the beans pressed and powdered. Both are antioxidants; rich in magnesium and potassium. Without sugar or dairy products the benefits of chocolate reach you in their pure state. When chocolate is eaten raw, the enzymes (important for health) remain intact and the amazing properties of chocolate are undiluted to be enjoyed to the full.

Tom & I have long believed that enzymes contained in raw foods are more important than mainstream media have portrayed. Tom says that what makes a cell living is the enzymes. For instance, what seems more healthy--a raw apple or a cooked one? Why do you think that is? We both have tried to up our intake of raw vegetables to some degree of success, & I think it has made a difference in our energy overall.

Back to raw chocolate. It is full of Tryptophan (the relax chemical), Anandamide (the bliss chemical), Phenylethaylamine (PEA, the joy molecule), Polyphenols (heart-nurturing), MAO inhibitor (appetite suppressant), and about 300 other nutritional compounds. But most importantly, it tastes really good! It's not sweet but can be sweetened with fruit, aguave nector, or whatever you use.

We created some raw chocolate drinks in the Vitamix & they are really good so I thought I would share:

Toms Raw Healthy Chocolate Drink

2 cups pure water
one cup raw cashews
3 medjool dates
1/2 cup raw cacao nibs

Add cashews to water & set vitamix to low for about 30 seconds
Slowly add pitted dates & cacao nibs
Blend up to one minute
Drink up

Lala's Raw Healthy Chocolate Drink

3 cups pure water
1 1-2 cup raw cashews
aguave nector
1/2 cup raw cacao nibs

Add cashews to water & set vitamix to low for about 30 seconds
Add cacao nibs
Blend up to one minute then strain.
Add aguave nector to taste.

Man, I've got to go make some right now!

Hope you like our Vitamix recipes. I am a Vitamix nut & have lots of them so if you want more let me know.

Drink up : )

Must Be Going Around

We got a knock on the door at the office around 2:30pm today. Turns out water has been leaking for at least a day now down into the church office downstairs. We opened up the closet where the water heater lives & surprise!, water was pouring out of the water tank. I don't know what the problem is, but we're pretty sure that some pipes are frozen somewhere...

I've been empathizing with Merle's frozen pipes as I read her daily blog but didn't realize I would soon have my own story.

Re: I Miss Snow

Let me be more specific...I miss snow, not cold! I can handle a little of the white stuff on the lawn for a couple of days but this whole windchill at -14 degrees can go back up north where it belongs! I hope everybody is ok, their pipes don't freeze, cars start, & they can stay warm.

Facebook Fatigue

I've been hearing the word "Facebook" for some time now & it's intensifying every week. Words like "Superpoke" are gaining ground in common American lexicon & the average business lunch includes reference after reference to Facebook, often ending with "hey man, look me up on facebook when you get back to the office".

I've been hired to teach a class on Facebook & tie it to guerilla marketing & it doesn't even bother me to do so. I think it's inevitable that Facebook will peak & then level off. Maybe it already has.

For those of you wondering (I can't imagine), Facebook is a free-access social networking site that allows users to join & instantly become part of networks organized by city, workplace, school, region, or interest to connect withothers. You create a personal profile & voila! the friend finder tool instantly starts suggesting others you might know so that you can add them as a friend to your profile.

Messages, free apps, etc. are all stupid-simple & require little or no real training on the part of the user. Within a day many newbies hook up with friends & loved ones they haven't been able to find for years.

I know people who admit to spending at least an hour a day on Facebook & from what I can tell, most folks using the service actually log in multiple times each day to check up on their posse.

You can update the world as to what you are doing at any given moment. Ex--"I'm craving a parsley salad" No joke, I actually saw that in December. I might not have seen that fellow since 5th grade but I now know he craves parsley salads.

It's exactly that kind of information overload that is going to tire us out. Oh wait, maybe it's the thinly veiled semi professional commercials my friends are throwing at me now. Or could it be the 90+ requests in my Notifications to "join ________ group & make a difference"? Information overload!

When I get asked to teach a subject to a group of business people it means the subject has become mainstream & business is now trying to figure out how to exploit it to their advantage. Not that I blame them. After all, we're talking about an extremely targeted demographic that they, "the business people" can market to for no cost but their time. Oh, maybe their integrity too, but I'm pretty sure most of them aren't using that anyway.

So start saying buh-bye to your love affair with Facebook. You'll be tired of it soon enough & it will eventually sink into it's proper place on the Internet. I don't think it will go away anytime soon, but it will evolve & it's appeal may be a bit tarnished by the time this massive wave of
"average joes just trying to make a buck" is finished with it.

Piece of advice--don't even ask me about Twitter.

See you at the next big thing.
